Friday Flotsam and Jetsam
For many, MLK, Jr. Day on Monday was a day on, not a day off. I spent the day removing blackberries, so this week's flotsam looks at invasive species, as well as some follow up to last week's questions, and a look ahead to upcoming events.
A day on, not a day off
This week started off with tons of people turning out for service projects around the country in honor of Martin Luther King, Jr. Day. I spent the day battling blackberries, along with 1,400 other UW students who turned out on various projects. Want to join a restoration project? Find a site near you, and come on down!
Invasive species
Speaking of blackberries, this week turned up an illustrated list of the world's 10 worst invasive species. We haven't got kudzu, at least, but there's always spartina or tunicates. Here's descriptions of many of Puget Sound's invasive species [pdf]. Perhaps not invasive, since it didn't survive, but this whale was certainly out of place in Puget Sound.
Questions & answers
Last week we learned about gulls (here's the answers), this week we learn about types of anchors. And while I'm not sure I wanted to see this, this week also brought a look into the grease clogging Seattle's sewer systems. Add that to your list of things not to put down the drain.
State of the Sound
Tune in to KUOW, 94.9 FM on Monday at 10 to hear Kathy Fletcher and David Dicks discuss the state of the Sound, and progress on clean up. And next Friday you can head over to the Seattle Boat Show. And in the past, I just discovered Ecology's video of the final dike removal in the Nisqually restoration. The water gets to mix, and it makes me happy.
