Storming the Sound
Annual Storming the Sound daylong conferences are held in North, Central, South and West Sound with the goal to link formal (k12) educators with resources and opportunities provided by informal Puget Sound organizations, prepare educators to teach using Puget Sound as context and to engage citizens in stewardship actions. Conferences train participants on current theory and practices of project based learning, behavior change and outreach theory and stewardship models.
Storming the Sound conferences, following a train the trainer model, will facilitate educators capacity to reach 200K (580K total in Puget Sound) students and 400K (4 million total) adults with stewardship messages. An important outcome of these conferences will be on-going support of educators by building and supporting regional learning communities of practice to include formal and informal educators. These learning communities will be established regionally through ECO Networks and ensure continued collaboration and peer to peer learning. In addition, we will follow up with conference participants to evaluate and track their use of educational and social marketing theories learned at conferences and their link with/use of community or school resources as a result of the conferences.
We design conferences and follow up services to enable students and community members to take awareness to action. Through Storming the Sound the Consortium will provide professional development and resources to teachers and help them connect to community and project-based learning opportunities for students. Collaboration between formal, informal educators and community leaders facilitates “life deep learning” that includes and goes beyond the school day.
