Duwamish Alive! Restore Our River
Earth Day, April 18, 2009
A thousand volunteers are needed at 12 restoration work sites along the Duwamish River on Saturday, April 18, 2009. Work parties begin at 10 AM as the annual Duwamish Alive! Earth Day community celebration kicks off to restore habitat for fish and wildlife. Pull weeds, mulch planting areas, plant native vegetation, and pick up debris and trash in the restoration areas. Bring yourself and work clothes; we provide tools, gloves, and instructions. REI will be providing snacks and coffee/tea for all sites. Sites in the Duwamish Watershed need your help!
- No experience necessary--we will discuss safety and give an overview of the project.
- The event will take place rain or shine.
- Dress for the weather (rain gear in case of bad weather or sunglasses and a hat if it's sunny).
- Wear sturdy foot gear (boots, sneakers, etc. but no sandals).
- Long trousers and long sleeves are helpful where there are blackberries
- Bring work gloves and weeding tools if you have them. Bring a refillable water bottle.
- We will provide work gloves, tools, snacks, and beverages.
- Children 10 and under must have one-to-one adult supervision.

2nd Annual Earth Day Festival
Immediately following the restoration event, join us at Cooper School for a festival of green alternatives, art and community activities. Come join us to celebrate!
- When: 2:00pm - 5:00pm (Immediately after restoration events)
- Where: Cooper Elementary School and Pigeon Point Park in West Seattle
- Cost: FREE entry, FREE food and open to all members of the community.
At the Festival: performing artists, kids crafts, nature hikes, raffle, and environmental education tables.
2009 Restoration Project Sites

People For Puget Sound will be hosting this large restoration event, along with the City of Tukwila, Puget Soundkeepers and Boeing. We will be completing a large salmon restoration project by removing invasive weeds, mulching last year’s plants and removing garbage. Work with The Nature Consortium and Earth Corps, removing invasive plants and native tree care in Seattle’s largest urban forest area that’s part of the Green Seattle Partnership. Meet at Cooper elementary school (same site as Earth Day Picnic from 2-5pm). (contact) -
South Park River Street Ends | 5th Ave South & S Fontanelle St.
Work with ECOSS and the Port of Seattle cleaning up two street ends that have been plagued by illegal dumping and neglect. We will be removing Japanese knotweed, blackberry and picking up garbage. (contact) - Kayak River Cleanup | 7900 10th Ave. S

Work with River City Skate Park organizers and Seattle Works to tackle invasive weeds, trash and help plant native species. Contact Mark Signalradio. - Maple School Natural Area | 18th Ave S and S Lucile St.
Work with EOS Alliance – The Maple School Natural Area, a 15-acre greenbelt on Beacon Hill, has been overrun by English ivy and blackberry. Join EOS Alliance to restore it to a healthy ecosystem by removing invasives and planting native species. Work with Georgetown Community Council and CleanScapes -- meet at the street end park at the end of 8th Avenue South to help remove invasive blackberry, remove trash from the tideline, mulch native planting areas, and work to keep the street's pedestrian areas clear of weeds and debris.
