Duwamish Alive! Restore Our River

Save the Date for this Autumn's Big Restoration Event

Join the on-going restoration of the Duwamish River Watershed. 

Twice a year the Duwamish Alive Coalition, a partnership of non-profit organizations, government agencies, community groups and local businesses, host a collaborative habitat restoration event within the Duwamish River Watershed.  Restoration is on-going throughout the year, but it’s only during Duwamish Alive that our organizations come together to host hundreds of volunteers at multiple sites to make a huge impact.  Work sites include a river cleanup by kayak and canoe, shoreline salmon habitat restoration, and native forest revitalization, and no experience is necessary!

The restoration of the Duwamish depends on community, non-profit, government and corporate partners working together to restore the urbanized environment. The Duwamish River Estuary has less than 3% of its original habitat remaining. Our goal is to help revive the watershed such that it can support healthy people, wildlife and thriving businesses, but in order to do so, we need YOU to join us, too. We are looking for school, work, or other organizational groups as well as individuals to volunteer for Duwamish Alive.

On April 17th, 2010, we celebrated the 40th Anniversary of Earth Day by hosting over a thousand volunteers at the 12 restoration sites listed below.  October 9th sites may vary.

2010 Restoration Project Sites

• West Duwamish Greenbelt/Pigeon Point |1901 SW Genesee St.
  Work with The Nature Consortium and Earth Corps, removing invasive plants and native tree care in Seattle’s largest urban forest area that’s part of the Green Seattle Partnership. (contact)
• North Wind's Weir | 2914 South 112th St., Tukwila
  Join People For Puget Sound, King County, NOAA, and the Environmental Coalition of South Seattle at the newest restoration site on the Duwamish River. Join us in our 3rd planting this year to fully stock North Wind's Weir with native plants.  We’ll install thousands of marsh plants and spread mulch around the sapling trees and shrubs already on site. We will have a ribbon cutting ceremony to celebrate the official “opening” of North Wind’s Weir Estuary Restoration Area.  Learn more about the restoration of this site here. (contact)
  
• Herring House/T-107, 4460 W Marginal Way SW
  Park at Westbridge Parks Dept.:  4209 West Marginal Way SW
  Work with Seattle Parks Department and the Port of Seattle on shoreline and upland restoration at this large habitat site next to Kellogg Island. (contact)
• Brandon Street Natural Area | 29th Ave SW & SW Brandon St.
  Work with the King Conservation District and Longfellow Creek Watershed Council to kill ivy and blackberry, spread wood chips, and pick-up trash. (contact)
• Duwamish Riverbend Hill | E Marginal Way S and S 115th St., Tukwila
  Meet on S. 115th St. in between E. Marginal Way S and 40th Ave S. Work with Friends of Riverbend Hill and Cascade Land Conservancy to continue stewardship of the hill. (contact)
• Gateway Park North/8th Avenue | 7699 8th Ave. S
  Work with Georgetown Community Council and CleanScapes to help remove invasive blackberry, remove trash from the tideline, mulch native planting areas, and work to keep the street's pedestrian areas clear of weeds and debris. Learn about native plants, the street's history and future community and business partnerships.  Meet at the street end park at the end of 8th Avenue South.  (contact)
• Duwamish River Kayak Cleanup | 7900 10th Ave. S
  Partner with Alki Kayak Tours, Puget Soundkeeper Alliance, Argosy Cruises, Neal Chism, and Duwamish River Cleanup Coalition to paddle the Duwamish and free it of garbage! Kayaks/equipment/instruction provided for free! All experience levels and personal kayaks/canoes are welcome, but reservations are required and space is limited. Meet at Duwamish Waterway Park. • Terminal 105 Park | 4032 W. Marginal Way SW
  Work with EOS Alliance and Port of Seattle on this Port of Seattle restoration site near the mouth of the Duwamish River.  We will be laying down cardboard and mulch to suppress persistent and pesky invasive weeds that threaten to take over our native plants.  (contact) 
• Puget Creek | 6700 18th Ave SW (SW Holly & 18th Ave. SW)
  Puget Creek Watershed Alliance will be hosting a planting, mulch moving, and garbage hauling work party.  (contact)
• Roxhill Bog | 2850 SW Roxbury St.
  Work with Friends of Roxhill Bog to remove invasives, pick up trash and restore the bog that is the headwaters of Longfellow Creek. (contact)
• Seacrest Park | 1660 Harbor Ave SW
  Work with the West Seattle Wildlife Habitat Project and Seattle Parks to restore the shoreline at Seacrest Park. (contact)
• Hamm Creek Estuary | 10000 West Marginal Pl. S.
  The Veterans Conservation Corps and I’m-A-Pal, will be working to remove invasive plants, mulch and plant native species. VCC affiliates only.
