People For Puget Sound Position on SSA Cherry Point Pier Proposal and Coal Export

4/12/11 position statement on SSA Cherry Point Pier Proposal and Coal Export Issue

4/12/11

For more than a decade, People For Puget Sound has worked to ensure that a proposed fourth dock at Cherry Point is built and operated in a way that protects a healthy environment.  From our 1999 legal settlement to current talks with SSA Marine about potential amendments to that agreement, People For Puget Sound has sought a path forward for the project that would protect herring, salmon and Puget Sound and create new jobs in the local community.  However, we are dismayed by recent information from SSA that the proposed dock will be used as a massive coal export operation.  Dust from coal trains, coal export and pollution from China are all serious concerns that were not associated with or considered under the original proposal.
