People For Puget Sound, a citizens’ group dedicated to protecting and restoring Puget Sound and the Northwest Straits, today honored its 2009 Warren G. Magnuson Sound Legacy Award winners at its “New Day For Puget Sound” breakfast at the Seattle Waterfront Marriott Hotel.
Awards were presented to three outstanding recipients:
- Earthjustice, for outstanding policy leadership, with special recognition of Jan Hasselman for his work in stormwater protection;
- The Northwest Straits Initiative for habitat restoration and stewardship, with special recognition of Tom Cowan, past director of the Northwest Straits Commission, and Jeff June of Natural Resource Consultants for derelict gear removal work; and
- Anne Murphy of the Port Townsend Marine Science Center for education.
Also recognized were the “Water Babies” of Monroe Middle School –students Kylie Armstrong, Chloe Cory, Isabel Cain, Zach Reynolds, Andie Walton and teacher/advisor Robin Oestreich – for their prizewinning water quality education and engaging website, and for exemplifying good stewardship.
The Magnuson Puget Sound Legacy Award honors the late Washington Senator Warren G. Magnuson who in the 1970s passed historic legislation protecting marine mammals and keeping supertankers out of the Sound, among other important bills.
Keynote speaker for the annual breakfast will be Billy Frank, Jr., chairman of the Northwest Indian Fisheries Commission.
