Space Travelers Honor Kathy Fletcher For Puget Sound Work

People For Puget Sound executive director Kathy Fletcher will be honored today in Seattle by the astronauts and cosmonauts of the Association of Space Explorers for her leadership of People For Puget Sound in protecting the waters, coastal habitats and endangered species of Puget Sound.
The conferring of the Leonov Medallion will take place at the Space Needle during the 21st Planetary Congress of the Association of Space Explorers gathering of about 70 astronauts and cosmonauts from 16 countries.
“Her outstanding efforts have directly influenced policy decisions to prevent oil spill damage, habitat destruction, storm water and industrial pollution, and shoreline degradation,” according to the certificate of recognition.
The Association of Space Explorers is a non-profit 501(c) 3 professional and educational organization of over 325 space travelers (astronauts and cosmonauts) from 33 nations. Founded in 1985, ASE’s mission is to provide a forum for professional dialogue among individuals who have orbited the Earth; to promote the benefits of space science and exploration; to promote education in science and engineering and inspire students at all levels; to foster environmental awareness; and to encourage international cooperation in the peaceful uses of outer space.
ASE International Co-President, astronaut John Fabian of Port Ludlow, Washington and ASE-Russia President, cosmonaut, Viktor Savinykh will officially open the Congress.
Fabian said “The Association of Space Explorers is thrilled to hold its annual congress in the beautiful and welcoming city of Seattle. We look forward to exciting technical sessions open to the public and to the opportunity to visit with students throughout Washington, to share our experiences and dreams for the future of space exploration.”
