Marine Science Book Club Welcomes Members, Friends

12/09 Olympia reading & discussion group gatherings around marine-related books

People For Puget Sound invites you to get cozy with a book this winter as part of our Marine Science Book Club Membership Meetings. An expert in the related subject matter will attend each Marine Science Book Club meeting to facilitate the discussion.

Blue Ocean coverFebruary 22: We’ll begin our book club meetings by considering the broad sweep of issues, causes, and effects of the relationship between people and the ocean by reading Song For the Blue Ocean — Encounters Along the World’s Coasts and Beneath the Seas by Carl Safina.

Rare Bird coverMarch 22: Our March book is Rare Bird: Pursuing the Mystery of the Marbled Murrelet by Maria Mudd Ruth who shares her affinity for these remarkably elusive birds. Indeed, it took ornithologists 185 years to discover the birds' nesting sites, high in old-growth trees. The author details her odyssey through the murrelet's home range, an area from the northern California coast up to Alaska.

Sea of Cortez cover

April 26: We’ll celebrate Earth Month with a discussion about The Log From the Sea of Cortez by John Steinbeck. In 1940 Steinbeck sailed in a sardine boat with his friend and marine biologist, Ed Ricketts, to collect marine invertebrates from the beaches of the Gulf of California. Their day-to-day story of this trip is told in the Log, which combines science, philosophy, and high-spirited adventure.

Empty Ocean cover  May 24: Richard Ellis' The Empty Ocean deals with the pressing issue of over fishing in the seas.

All meetings are open to the public as well as members and supporters. The meetings will be held at Traditions Cafe in Olympia beginning at 7 PM.
