Where's Fern Cove...and what makes it special?

At the northwest corner of Vashon Island there is a very special place that speaks to all that is valuable and worthy of protection in Puget Sound. Learn more here.

People For Puget Sound and the Vashon Park District have recently collaborated to establish at Fern Cove, located on the northwest side of Vashon Island, two sites for education and restoration.
The Baldwin house, which was the home of the first female physician in Washington State, is now a State Historical Landmark. Lisa Jaguzny, former Deputy Director for People For Puget Sound, said the recently renovated carriage house that sits on the shoreline use to be a parking garage and has been transformed into a building that can be used for education activities.
This building sits on 14 acres of park preserve with more than 750 feet of shoreline. The site has been featuring informative beach walks, but Jaguzny hopes to create a relationship with the Vashon Island School District and Vashon Audubon to develop additional programs.
The property has two year-round streams, deep water habitats, wetlands and a forest. This makes this area a diverse and distinctive place to study and an engaging and unique place to visit.
“Whether it's through a casual visit, regular walks, or guided naturalist educational experience—this place can be central to learning how to protect and restore Puget Sound,” Jaguzny said. “Fern Cove is one of those special places. A well-designed environmental interpretive station will enhance the experience for visitors to Fern Cove.”
